Spotlight on council wages at meeting

PAY rates for council staff and contractors will be a hot potato for debate at Sheffield Council’s monthly full meeting today.

Green Party members are calling on the authority to publish the ratio of highest to lowest pay for directly employed council staff and for companies with major contracts such as Capita, Kier and Veolia.

The challenge, to be made during the meeting, is in response to a national campaign by the Equality Trust and the increasing public concern over excessive pay in public and private sector.

Green Party members are unhappy Sheffield Council chief executive John Mothersole is paid 14 times what some council staff receive.

Green Central ward councillor Rob Murphy said: “Reducing the gap between high and low paid has benefits when council finances are being squeezed so much.”

When council cuts of £84 million were announced last year, Mr Mothersole decided to take a pay cut of 5 per cent on his then salary of £184,585.

The current Labour administration has yet to reveal what savings are being made at management level.
