Shocked neighbours of a woman hospitalised with ‘extensive’ burns saw her covered in thick bandages being helped into an ambulance.
A 46-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder remained in custody last night.
The 51-year-old woman was found by police injured on Primrose Avenue in Darfield, Barnsley, and remained in the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield in a ‘serious’ condition yesterday.
Neighbours spoke of how their small road was filled with police and paramedics in the dramatic incident on Monday at about 6.20pm.
Andrea Summers, who was visiting her daughter’s house on Primrose Avenue at the time, said: “What started it off was the smoke alarm next door – it was going off from about 4pm until when the police arrived.
“We came outside to see what was going on and told a police officer that we’d heard the alarm. He said it was an incident involving fire and asked us to go back in the house until they came to interview us.
“There were police here until about 10pm, and we saw the lady next door come out – she had a bandage around her head and her hands as well as a blanket around her.
“They were massive bandages – like boxing gloves.
“It is a shock to have something like this happen on your street.”
The woman found injured was named locally as Vicky Tindle, who lives with her husband Anthony on Primrose Avenue.
Anthony’s aunt Elizabeth Goddard, who also lives on the road, said: “It has been a real shock. We are a pretty close family and they come around to see if I am okay.
“I’m worried about Vicky because she is a lovely girl.
“I think Anthony had got a tumour on his brain, and he kept having fits, so Vicky had to stop working to look after him.”
Another neighbour, who didn’t want to be named, said a police helicopter was at the scene on Monday.
He added: “There were 20 or so police here.
“I saw the woman come out with a bandage on her head and police had closed the road off.”
Police said the 46-year-old man who was arrested on Monday had been taken into custody for questioning by detectives.
He remained in custody in South Yorkshire yesterday.
A police spokesman said: “Police were called to a property in Primrose Avenue, Darfield, where a 51-year-old woman was found suffering from extensive burn injuries. She was taken to Northern General Hospital where her condition was described on Tuesday as serious.”
