South Yorkshire Police reveal cost of hiring celebrities

Police chiefs in South Yorkshire have admitted paying celebrities to attend events.

They spent £7,500 on land-speed record-holder Richard Nobel and newsreader Angela Rippon, who were hired as guest speakers at events in 2009.

Mr Noble was paid £2,500 in 2009 and Ms Rippon got £5,000. Both also received expenses.

Television presenters Christa Ackroyd and Harry Gration have also been hired by the force over recent years, according to details released under the Freedom of Information Act, but police chiefs insist their appearances were all funded by event sponsors.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “As the figures show, celebrity appearances have not been paid from force funds for several years.

“These appearances are rare and over recent years have been funded through sponsorship.”
