South Yorkshire murder arrest

Shock: Police at the scene of the murder in Upperwood Road, Darfield, Barnsley.

Shock: Police at the scene of the murder in Upperwood Road, Darfield, Barnsley.

NEIGHBOURS have spoken of their shock after a woman was murdered at her South Yorkshire home.

Police were called to an address on Upperwood Road, Darfield, near Barnsley on Monday afternoon, where they found the body of a 35-year-old woman.

A 42-year-old man found at the scene with stab injuries was arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to hospital, where he is stable.

Yesterday residents of Upperwood Road expressed their shock and disbelief at the tragedy.

Neighbour John Lacey said he saw police cars arrive at the house at around 4pm.

Shortly afterwards he saw police officers bring the man out in a wheelchair and put him into an ambulance.

He told The Star: “The police came to see me shortly afterwards and told me they’d found a deceased person in the house.”
Mr Lacey, 83, said his two great-grandaughters frequently played in the flat, which was cordoned off with police tape yesterday, following the incident.

“The couple have two young girls who go to school with my granddaughters and they were always playing together,” said Mr Lacey.

“When I heard somebody had died I thought ‘God please don’t it be one of those little girls.’”
Mr Lacey, who has lived on Upperwood Road for over 40 years, told The Star the family had only moved into the street two or three months earlier.

He said: “Their father never said much when he came round to pick them up, but he seemed like a nice, polite man.

“It’s shocking to think something like this has happened right across the road.

“My thoughts are with those little girls.”

Neighbour, Joanne Ashford, said the family had kept themselves to themselves since they had arrived on the street.

She said: “I hadn’t seen much of them, but they would always smile and nod.

“You don’t expect these things to happen right on your doorstep.”

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police are investigating the alleged murder of a 35-year-old woman from Darfield, Barnsley.

“Officers were called to an address on Upperwood Road, Darfield, on Monday, March 4 at around 4.22pm.

“A 35-year-old woman was found deceased and a 42-year-old man had sustained stab injuries and was taken to hospital, where he is currently being treated and is in a stable condition.

“The 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in hospital.”

A post-mortem examination was due to take place yesterday.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting incident number 825 of Monday, March 4.
