A SOUTH Yorkshire Fire & Rescue officer is heading to the Houses of Parliament to receive an award for his work promoting the use of sprinklers across the UK.
Roger Brason, a fire safety officer specialising in sprinkler protection, has been awarded the National Fire Sprinkler Network’s Bernadette Hartley Memorial Award, which recognises individuals who make a significant contribution to community safety.
The 62-year-old, who has worked for the service for seven years, played a key role in a pioneering project to retro fit sprinklers to a block of flats on Callow Mount, Sheffield in 2011.
Now he is campaigning for sprinklers to be fitted to all new homes in England.
He’ll receive the award at a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament next month.
Roger said: “I am delighted to get this award which is recognition not just of my efforts, but also of the efforts of staff across South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue in relation to fire safety.
“There is still a great deal of work to be done, and I’m hopeful my visit to the Houses of Parliament will provide the opportunity to once again press home the importance of introducing legislation to fit sprinklers in all new homes.”
SYFR’s chief fire officer Jamie Courtney said: “Roger fully deserves this honour for his tireless work to protect our communities through the promotion of sprinklers.
“The Callow Mount project was the first of its kind in the UK, and its success has paved the way for other towns and cities to introduce such potentially life-saving measures.”
The National Fire Sprinkler Network’s Steve Mills said: “Roger’s hard work, enthusiasm and success in promoting the wider use of fire suppression systems for the benefit of the community have been widely recognised over a number of years. He is a worthy recipient of the Bernadette Hartley Memorial Award.”
