South Yorkshire charity launches helpline appeal at gala day

SAFE@LAST celebrated its 10th anniversary of its young persons helpline with a gala fun day

A gala day was held to mark the tenth anniversary of a helpline which supports South Yorkshire children.

The helpline was launched by Safe@Last in 2004 and, since then, 4,250 calls have been answered from youngsters needing help.

But despite it being the charity’s longest running service, it receives little funding towards its £27,500 a year costs and faces an uncertain future.

A gala fun day was held by the charity at the Dinnington Resource Centre to celebrate the helpline anniversary and launch an appeal to raise funds for it.

Hilary Massarella, founder trustee, said: “For me it was the perfect celebration rooted in the community that took Safe@Last to its heart from the very beginning.

“The event gave us the opportunity to celebrate our roots as well as our success.

“I was very touched that a little girl approached me at the event and gave me her holiday spending money towards our helpline appeal. I am proud to be able to reassure that little girl, and everyone that supports Safe@Last, their donation will ensure lots of children can get help when they need it most.”

Tracy Haycox, director of children and young people’s services, said: “Although the helpline is our longest running service it receives very little funding and as such faces an uncertain future.

“It’s just as important now as it was 10 years ago to get all the support we can to continue to provide this vital service to children and young people.”

To support the appeal visit www.justgiving.com/HelplineAppeal or text APPL55 and £1, £2, £4, £5 or £10 to 70070.
