Snow: Rotherham bin collections suspended

NEWS: The Star news around the clock.

NEWS: The Star news around the clock.

HOUSEHOLD waste bin collections have been suspended in Rotherham on safety grounds following the severe snow fall, the council has confirmed.

Main roads across the Borough are running well but drivers of the 32 tonne waste vehicles are finding some of the side roads very hazardous making safe driving conditions very difficult.

Householders are advised to put their waste bins out as usual as the waste teams will resume the collection service as soon as possible. Rotherham Borough Council hopes to get its collection schedule back on track as quickly as possible and appreciates householders patience as crews try to work through these adverse wintery conditions.

The four Household Waste Recycling Centres across the Borough are also experiencing difficulties.

It is hoped they will be open later today (January 21) once the snow has been cleared from the sites and they are safe for the public to use.

Rotherham Mobile Library and Book Link services will not be running today because of both the weather conditions and technical issues.

Meanwhile, the town’s Streetpride teams from Rotherham Borough Council worked around the clock over the weekend to keep the roads clear and as safe as possible - resulting in the vast majority of roads being kept open.

Preparatory work on the main routes has meant that there was sufficient time on Saturday and Sunday to allow salting teams to continue to work on secondary routes and side roads as well as deal with requests from the public, which seemed to be appreciated.

The primary routes were then continually salted throughout the night.

Today all the salting fleet has been out on the main routes, while teams are re-filling salt bins. About 20 teams of staff - 50 people in all - have been hand-spreading salt at specific locations around schools, sheltered housing complexes and shopping areas.

The authority is reviewing its salt reserves on a daily basis - but still has about 2,500 tonnes of salt at its Hellaby depot.
