A teenage sex attacker who tried to rape a stranger on a Sheffield street has had his jail term cut by appeal judges.

Declan Alexander Scott Cooper grabbed the 50-year-old as she walked home from work and told her he had a knife, although he did not.

The 19-year-old, of Shirehall Road, Shiregreen, Sheffield, was jailed for six years at the city’s crown court in December last year, after admitting attempted rape and sexual assault.

But his sentence was cut to five years and three months by judges sitting at London’s Criminal Appeal Court, who said the original term was ‘too long’.

The attack happened on Hatfield House Lane, Shiregreen.

Cooper’s lawyers argued his guilty plea spared the victim giving evidence and he should have been given full credit.

Justice Elias said: “In the circumstances, and bearing in mind the age of the appellant, we think that the full discount for his guilty plea would have been appropriate.”
