Locals have been warned to be on their guard after bogus callers have turned up on Sheffield doorsteps posing as council contractors.

A number of incidents have been reported where a company claiming to be working for Amey has offered to resurface driveways in Waterthorpe and Meadowhead using left over materials from resurfacing works.

Amey is the company delivering the Streets Ahead project on behalf of the council.

Streets Ahead account director Graeme Symonds said: “We are encouraging all residents and businesses to be vigilant and not to hand over money to companies or people claiming to be either from Amey or Streets Ahead.

“We do not carry out driveway repairs and we certainly don’t take cash on the doorstep.

“If anyone is approached by someone claiming to be from Amey, connected to Amey or the Streets Ahead project and offering to mend or resurface your drive, then we would ask that they take their details, including vehicle registration number, and tell us so that we can report it to the police.

“We would like to thank the residents who brought this to our attention. They did exactly the right thing.”

All Streets Ahead and Amey employees carry identity cards. If you have any doubts about the identity of a person carrying one, call customer services on 0114 273 4567.
