Sheffield pupils donate a penny for their cause

Children and families at Sharrow School held a penny trail to raise money for charity.

Children and families at Sharrow School held a penny trail to raise money for charity.

Pennies amassed pounds at a Sheffield school where youngsters were keen to do their bit to help the Phillipines disaster appeal.

Loose change brought into Sharrow Primary was turned into impromptu artwork in the school hall - and when the coins were all counted the total was nearly £900.

In the event, organised by the school council, youngsters came into class with their money boxes and plastic bags full of coins of all kinds.

The pupils used them to create patterns and slogans, before the big count up at the end of the day.

“We brought all the different year groups into the hall throughout the day - the hardest bit was collecting all the money up and counting it,” said spokeswoman Susan Atkinson.

“We would like to thank all our families.”
