A MAN fled to France after stabbing his ex-wife repeatedly and telling her that she deserved to die, a court heard.
Mohammed Bilal, aged 28, told Shameen Iqbal he was ‘going to end it all’ as he stabbed her with a knife in her leg, neck and abdomen on October 3 last year.
During the first day of the attempted murder trial at Sheffield Crown Court, the jury heard Mr Bilal had let himself into the house on Fulford Place, Darnall, Sheffield, through the unlocked front door.
Miss Iqbal was pushed to the floor and stabbed before her friend Nazrath Unis, who was in the house, and passer-by Andrew Murray helped raise the alarm.
Prosecutor Fiona Swain told the court the couple’s relationship had broken down two years earlier because Mr Bilal had an alcohol problem.
“She did not want to reconcile, but the defendant said if he couldn’t have her, then nobody could,” said Mrs Swain.
She also told the court prior to the incident Mr Bilal had been made the subject of a restraining order.
Following the attack, Miss Iqbal was rushed to the Northern General Hospital where she received life-saving surgery – while Mr Bilal fled to Paris on a ferry after getting a lift to Dover.
He was arrested by police four days later after returning to Sheffield.
“He only came back to this country when doctors had successfully operated on Miss Iqbal,” Mrs Swain added.
Mr Bilal, of Bawtry Road, Tinsley, Sheffield, admits wounding with intent, having an offensive weapon and three counts of breaching a restraining order. He denies attempted murder.
The trial continues.
