War veterans remembered fallen comrades during a trip to the National Memorial Arboretum - thanks to a Sheffield funeral home.

David Reaney and Keith Gray from John Fairest Funeral Directors took the pensioners to Staffordshire for the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

Around 40 ex-servicemen including some from Stannington Royal British Legion and the Hillsborough branch of The Fellowship of Services went on the trip after money was donated by the pair’s bosses.

David, a funeral service operative, said he looks after the war memorial next to the funeral home on Halifax Road and wanted to organise something for the local community.

“It was the first time any of them had been before. We spent the day there and had a ride on the land train,” he said.

Refreshments for the trip were provided free of charge by the Spar supermarket on Leppings Lane, Hillsborough.
