Schoolchildren go before the judge in Hallam court battle

Budding young lawyers took part in a Sheffield courtroom showdown as they battled it out to be crowned the winners of the 2014 inter-school mock trial competition.

Finalists from Notre Dame High School were narrowly beaten into second spot by a team from a Lincolnshire academy at the event organised by Sheffield Hallam University.

The two teams took on the roles of prosecution and defence in front of a jury of Hallam academics and local solicitors.

A fake trial was based around an assault charge and a self-defence claim in the event held at Sheffield Law Courts.

Acting as the trial judge, Mr Justice Coulson, a high court judge based in London, said: “This has been a very good exercise with very articulate students.

“I thought the performances were really very good and a lot of it wouldn’t have been out of place in your average court hearing.”

The winning team members will now be offered work experience opportunities by Sheffield Law Society. Eight schools took part.
