The wind caused havoc in Doncaster last night with roads and a school closed as a result.

A man had to be rescued from his car in Cantley after a tree fell on it.

Arksey Primary School was closed this morning because of wind damage to its roof, while the A1(M) was closed because of an overturned lorry. And a truck fell over at around last night near Doncaster services on the M180.

West Street was closed because of falling masonry.

Doncaster area fire crews attended three incidents in Doncaster and gave advice to other callers.

The first incident was at 6.20pm in Goodison Boulevard, Cantley, where a man was trapped in his car by a fallen tree until tree surgeons cut it up and he could be freed. The extent of his injuries are not known.

Another tree fell on a car in Apy Hill Lane, Tickhill, around 7.30pm but no-one was trapped.

Crews were also called to Somersby Avenue, Sprotbrough, when an electrical cable was whipped onto a telegraph pole. The incident was dealt with power engineers.

South Yorkshire Police said they were called to 200 wind related incidents.

And around 40 trees were reported to have been blown down by the powerful winds.

It is not known when Arksey Primary School will reopen.

Last night scores of rail passengers were stranded just outside Doncaster after two trees fell on the 5.45pm East Coast service from Leeds, bringing down overhead power lines.

Duke Street in Doncaster town centre was also closed when the windows of the former TJ Hughes store was blown out. The gales also ripped off the metal shutters of The Colonnades Centre.

Doncaster Council said Moorhouse Lane, near Hooton Pagnell, and Blyth Gate Lane and Apy Hill Lane, Tickhill, were all closed because of trees.
