Safety message to motorists

VALENTINE’S Day today is being used to drive home road safety messages - with young men being urged to take special care of their partners when they are behind the wheel.

Ken Wheat, manager of the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership, said: “A disproportionate number of 17 to 24 year-olds are killed and seriously injured on the roads, and male drivers in that age group are nearly three times as likely to be killed or seriously injured as a female driver.

“Quite often passengers feel uncomfortable in telling their drivers to alter the way they drive, but in some instances the consequences of not doing so can be fatal.’’
