A South Yorkshire man has been jailed for five years for raping a woman.

Mark Philip Unwin, aged 36, from Catcliffe, Rotherham, pleaded guilty to the offence during a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court.

The court heard he attacked his victim on May 28.

PC Nicola Milner, from South Yorkshire Police’s specialist rape investigation unit, said: “As this case shows, South Yorkshire Police takes all reports of rape extremely seriously and will work tirelessly to bring offenders to justice.

“We have specially-trained officers in place who work with victims from the moment a rape is reported, gathering every piece of evidence in order to secure a conviction.

“I hope the fact that Unwin pleaded guilty brings some small shred of comfort to the victim in this case, as she was spared the further trauma of going through a Crown court trial.”

South Yorkshire Police’s specialist rape investigation unit consists of mainly female officers who are specially trained to provide help and support to victims throughout the criminal justice process.

Call police on 101.
