Rail chaos after man killed and woman hurt

A MAN died and a woman was seriously injured in separate incidents on Doncaster railway lines which led to disruption for thousands of passengers yesterday.

The fatality was on the Doncaster to Leeds line near Adwick-le-Street before dawn.

Six hours later, an air ambulance flew a young woman from Thorne South station to hospital in Sheffield after she was struck ‘a glancing blow’ by a passenger train as she crossed the tracks.

That incident also caused delays to services between Doncaster and stations in north Lincolnshire.

The body of a Doncaster man in his 30s was removed from the track after a train driver reported a collision just after 5.30am.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “BTP officers were called to a foot crossing close to Hangthwaite Lane, Adwick-le-Street, following a report of a body on the line.

“Medics from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service also attended, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the identity of the man and inform his family. It is currently being treated as non-suspicious and a file will be prepared to the Coroner.”

Network Rail said the one of the lines back was back in use by 6.50am and police released the tracks for full service around 7.30am, with four trains cancelled and 10 part-cancelled as a result.

A spokeswoman said: “We apologise to passengers for the delay, services were resumed as quickly as possible.”

Later, just before 10.30am, police, firefighters and paramedics were called to Thorne South station after a woman was hit by a train

The BTP spokesman said: “Medics from Yorkshire Ambulance Service also attended and a woman in her 30s, who is thought to have received a glancing blow as she walked between the platforms.

“She was taken to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield with severe back injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident. It is believed to be non-suspicious.”

The fire crew from Thorne spent almost an hour assisting with the rescue of the woman, hit by the 9.26am Cleethorpes to Manchester Airport service.

Last month Emma Lifsey, four, from Haxey, was killed when a car she was travelling in was hit by a train on the level crossing at Misson Springs.
