The former manager of a Sheffield GP surgery who stole £180,000 from the practice has been spared an immediate jail term.

Richard West defrauded Nethergreen Surgery in Nethergreen Road, Nether Green, out of the cash over a four-year period.

The 57-year-old used the company credit card for personal spending and also wrote business cheques out which he cashed and put in his personal bank account.

West was caught after practice bosses noticed irregularities in the firm’s accounts and called police.

West was arrested in August 2013.

West, of Hollinsend Road, Gleadless, Sheffield, admitted two counts of fraud by false representation and one of theft by an employee when he appeared at Leeds Crown Court.

He was given a two-year suspended jail term.

PC Lee Corker, from South Yorkshire Police, who led the investigation, said: “Police were called by West’s employer in August 2013 about financial irregularities in the company accounts.

“An investigation followed and revealed that, over a period of about five years, West took advantage of his position as a business manager to steal from and defraud his employer.

“West admitted his crimes and we were able to secure a conviction for this case.

“We are now looking at seizing his assets through the Proceeds of Crime Act.”

A surgery spokesman said: “The practice has been through a difficult time following the discovery of the fraud.

“When financial irregularities were uncovered the surgery acted swiftly and reported it to police.

“With the support of its staff, the patient participation group and a new management team, the practice has gone from strength to strength.

“The surgery has worked hard to ensure that, at all times, the delivery of its services were unaffected, and passed its CQC inspection in November 2013.

“The surgery aims to continue to offer a high standard of care to its patients.”
