Police chiefs worst paid in country after cars go

editorial image

SOUTH Yorkshire’s most senior ranking police officers are all to lose their car allowances - making them the worst-paid police chiefs in the country.

The decision to axe the payments has been made as the police authority struggles to get applicants for the role of Chief Constable, following the retirement of Med Hughes yesterday.

The authority was forced to re-advertise when only two people applied.

One police source said today: “Cutting the car allowance will make the Chief Constable the lowest paid in the country.”

South Yorkshire Police was paying around £1,000 a month to lease an Audi A8 for Mr Hughes and Deputy Chief Constable Bob Dyson, who will be acting as Chief Constable, has a BMW.

Assistant Chief Constables Max Sahota and Andy Holt and finance director Nigel Hiller also have BMWs paid for by the force.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police Authority said: “Members felt it appropriate to include a review of the terms and conditions of service for the force’s Senior Command Team as part of the Authority’s overall financial planning.

“After detailed consideration the authority has decided to phase out the current provision of cars to its senior officers in the most cost effective way.”

Its high time these costly Public Sector perks were addressed in these austere times, when family's are struggling and feeling the pinch. Most of the Barnsley Council staff at Westgate Plaza at Barnsley get free parking in the car park on Churchfields, money which could be put back into the Council coffers. Ordinary motorists struggle to find a parking space in the car park due to the amount displaying Barnsley Council Permits.

I'm sure on their salaries they can afford to buy their own cars (and then claim the money back as a tax deduction) My heart bleeds for them. Not.

#11 You are right about one thing: public sector staff quickly learn to do the minimum they can get away with. I used to work for the Post Office. Now there's an organisation with a serious attitude problem. In the public sector there is no incentive to do better. Even if there was an incentive the standard of management is so weak that they can't identify those who do better and end up rewarding themselves anyway It's a system based on stick and no carrott. Personally I don't think anyone in the public sector is worth more than £80k a year. Definitely not at the Town Hall.

Maybe they are the worst paid but that could also mean the others are overpaid! . . . . Do they still get mortgage relief or housing costs or was that stopped as well? . . . Too many high ranking officials seem to act now as though they are celebrities and are entitled to these expensive luxuries.

@9 I cant completely agree, its true public service employees get paid irrespective of competancy in their position, but some deserve every penny they get and other with the same title and same pay scale are just 'getting away with it'. 'Getting away with it' only really exists in public sector jobs but it does retract from others who work their ar53 off and get tarred with the same brush. This breeds a mentality of 'why should I be trying if Bob gets paid the same as me'.....Only real answer to this is more vigorous ousting of incompitend people they are bad influences because new keen employees quickly learn the minimum required by them to keep ticking over. There is little healthy competion in this sort of environment therefore reducing the overall potential of people. As for massively overpaid, I know high ranking Army and Police officers who deffinately deserve their 80-100k

Recession proof job and a gold plated pension with a fat salary to boot. It must be awful to lose the car allowance as well.

Finally, the penny has dropped. Money needs to be saved so cutting the perks of senior management makes more sense than cutting front line staff. It's not like the poor luvs are starving is it? Senior management of all public services are massively overpaid for the responsibility they take i.e none. Anyway where the police are concerned....When the going gets tough the not so tough retire. I am not surprised senior plods are not exactly queuing up for the top job. The good times are over.

While the police are going to be stopped having such high price cars, stop also the so called disability cars !!!! it stupid how many have such big landrovers and sports cars when most of the time its clearly obvious they are not needed.
