Police chiefs could lose cars
A DISCUSSION is to be held about whether senior police officers in South Yorkshire are to keep their company cars.
The county’s Police Authority, which oversees the way South Yorkshire Police is run, funded and performs, is considering removing the company car allowance the Chief Constable and senior command team currently receive as part of their pay and conditions packages.
Scrapping the allowance will make the county’s top ranking officers the most poorly paid in the country.
The Police Authority is currently advertising for a new Chief Constable and is set to meet on Friday.

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 06:23 PMThe X5 that was mentioned in post 4 belongs to a senior fire officer on call, not a police officer. Oh, and I'm sure it's not necessary to point out that public bodies pay considerably less than retail prices for specialist vehicles - it would be obvious to even the most stupid of people.

Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 08:02 AMI think most of the plod at grass roots would love to get on the beat but the decision to stick them all in cars is made by the incompetents further up the food chain... As for company cars for the big cheeses ... Diabolical Don't worry though these types of cuts will be forced on them as the cash is all bar gone.

Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 09:23 PMTaxedalot - The X5 is the best vehicle there is for the Armed Response Group, it is safe, reliable and can take the amount of Firearms needed in the vehicle safely without having to spend thousands of pounds adapting it to fit the kit. We have had the discussion before about vehicles - you can buy cheap like our force does and buy twice. The vehicles need to be reliable and cost effective. The BMW'S last for many, many years and also achieve a very good re-sale value, a Vauxhall Van for example would need its suspension strengthened, 4 times the amount of servicing and would need a major overhaul at least once a year for new gearboxes, clutches etc. When it comes to be sold on it would sell for very little and so as a result the BMW is a natural choice. You will find very little support from rank and file officers for any perks like this for Chief Officers. I personally believe that they should fund their own car just like anyone else! Absolutely no need for a "Company Car" - we are not a PLC we are the Police! So in regard to the last bit of your comment I completely agree with you! ABH - I cant really see how the "police have lost control". If you are talking about the recent rise in Gang related shootingsstabbings around SY its an unfortunate sign of the times. Compared to most other major cities Sheffields gang and crime rate is a lot lot better than most!!

Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 04:48 PMWhat about getting them a Company Bus Pass? We're always being told what an excellent public transport system South Yorks has......

Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 12:32 PMWhat's to discuss? I saw a senior plod racing round the roundabout at the bottom of The Parkway in his BMW X5 only yesterday. That sort of extravagance has to go. The gravy train for senior public sector staff has got to be stopped. If they don't like it they can always quit.

Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 08:43 AMIt is about time the police got out of the cars and actually got on the beat and talked to people and built up some rapport with the public. Most kids won't have seen snow until last year and probably haven't seen a policeman either.
