Police arrest 69 in road crime purge

A TWO-week cross-border police operation to catch criminals on the roads resulted in 69 arrests.

South Yorkshire Police joined forces with officers from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire to tackle serious crime by targeting robbers and ‘two-in-one’ burglars who break into homes to steal keys to vehicless.

As part of Operation Deny officers targeted the M1 between Junctions 36 and 24 and the major A roads that intersect the road.

Det Chf Insp David Barraclough, who led the South Yorkshire operation, said: “This operation has enabled three forces to work closely together to tackle those people who are committing offences across county borders and believe that by travelling from one force to another they can evade capture and this has been shown not to be the case.

“We will continue to focus our efforts on these people to prevent them from committing crime in South Yorkshire and travelling to other areas.”

Supt Gary Knighton, who led the Derbyshire operation, added: “The three forces always work closely together and we know that criminals cross county borders to commit offences.

“The aim of Operation Deny was to deny criminals the opportunity to offend, stop them using the road network unchecked, make sure they couldn’t benefit from crime and make them face the consequences of their actions.”

Staff from the Department of Work and Pensions, the Vehicle Operator Services Agency, environmental health, British Transport Police, BT, Eon and local trading standards helped to carry out checks .

Officers checked scrap metal companies and second-hand shops to try to track down suspects and recover stolen property. a number of search warrants were executed.

As well as 69 arrests, 41 of which were in Sheffield, officers recovered 44 vehicles and four caravans.
