Police search for missing prisoner

POLICE are still searching for a missing prisoner with links to South Yorkshire.

Convicted rapist Sean Cawthray, aged 41, escaped from Leyhill open prison in Bristol on Sunday, December 30.

He is known to have links to South Yorkshire but forces around the country have been alerted to his disappearance.

Cawthray was jailed indefinitely in 2002 after kidnapping a 14-year-old girl.

He had previously been jailed for four years in 1990 for rape and attempted rape; and for eight years in 1993 for another rape.

Cawthray is white, 5ft 9ins to 5ft 11ins, medium build with brown hair and blue eyes.

When last seen he was wearing a pair of silver training shoes, cream combat trousers and a light blue Helly Hansen-type top.

He may have been wearing either a worker’s fluorescent jacket, a grey jacket with orange patches or a black jacket with a blue patch.

DI Jill Kells, from South Gloucestershire CID, said: “Our efforts to locate Sean Cawthray continue and we will work tirelessly until he is apprehended and returned to prison. Since he was last seen we have been busy conducting extensive enquiries and are working closely with local police forces in the areas where he has links.

“We have not had any confirmed sightings so far but people must know where he is and someone may be protecting him.”
