Police hunt arsonist who set fire to car belonging to pensioner, 71

CRIME: Crime scene.

CRIME: Crime scene.

POLICE have released CCTV footage of a man they want to trace over an arson attack in Rotherham.

Detectives have released the footage after the attack on Norwood Crescent, Kiveton Park, Rotherham, was captured on camera.

The film shows a man approaching a blue Vauxhall Meriva, pouring a substance over the windscreen and bonnet of the vehicle, and setting it alight.

The car goes up in flames and the arsonist is seen running away from the burning vehicle.

Police said the car belonged to a 71-year-old man.

Detectives investigating the incident in the early hours of Thursday, November 15, are linking it to another two arson attacks.

The victim had another car - a silver Vauxhall Safira - set alight on September 11 last year and his daughter’s house on Ash Grove, Kiveton Park, was targeted on July 26.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Detectives investigating an alleged arson in Rotherham have released CCTV footage of the incident in an appeal to the public to help locate those responsible.

“A man described as white and stocky, with fair brown hair, is seen to approach a blue Vauxhall Meriva on Norwood Crescent.

“The footage shows that he approached the vehicle from the front, sprayed an unknown accelerant over the windscreen and bonnet of the car and lights it.

“The vehicle sets alight immediately and the man runs away.

“In addition, police are investigating a previous alleged arson on a silver Vauxhall Safira belonging to the same victim. Reports of a further arson at Ash Grove, Kiveton Park - the home of the victim’s daughter - are also being investigated. “

Detectives are treating all of the incidents as linked and are appealing to the public to help them with their inquiries.
