Rotherham MP Sarah Champion has written to Prime Minister David Cameron inviting him to the town’s foodbank which provides free food for needy residents.

Her letter, also signed by the Reverend Danny Miller, who runs the centre, suggests Mr Cameron ‘may benefit’ from the visit.

Ms Champion said children in the town were going to school hungry.

She told the PM: “We want you to see the people coming to the Foodbank.

“These are working people who have to make decisions between putting food on the table or paying their rent or mortgage.

“This is week on week, month on month and the problem is growing.”

Ms Champion added: “In Rotherham, one in five children are going to school hungry.

“We have evidence of teachers and social workers having whip-rounds and raiding their own cupboards to feed these children.”

Ms Champion has not yet received a reply.
