Motorists faced traffic chaos yesterday - as one of Doncaster’s busiest roads was shut after a pedestrian footbridge collapsed onto the carriageway on Cleveland Street.

A section of bridge came down after it was struck by a crane mounted on a lorry, which has been impounded by police. The bridge collapsed at around 11am yesterday.

The driver, a man in his early 40s, suffered minor injuries. A spokesman for the lorry’s owners Plasmor said: “We don’t know how the crane came to be elevated. It’s a freak accident.”

Nearby resident Bawar Salih said: “I heard this big crashing noise. I went outside and couldn’t believe it.”
