Patrolling police figures drop
THE number of police officers on the streets of South Yorkshire dropped by 143 between September 2010 and September 2011, new figures reveal.
In Derbyshire the county lost 156 officers and in Nottinghamshire the force was 165 officers down, according to the figures from the Home Office.
Today John Healey, MP for Wentworth and Dearne, said the statistics proved the Government must rethink its approach to policing.
“People will have real concerns about the loss of officers here in South Yorkshire,” he said.
“People in South Yorkshire value the work local police officers do in our community and I will be voting against the Government’s police cuts next month.”
Shadow Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, said: “David Cameron and Theresa May are letting down communities and turning their backs on the police. They should be battling to cut crime, but they are just cutting the police instead.”
