POLICE officers in South Yorkshire investigated 27 reports of crimes involving Facebook and Twitter in 2012 – resulting in seven charges being brought.

Figures released under the Freedom of Information Act revealed that, nationally, complaints have increased 780 per cent over the last four years, resulting in more than 650 people being charged this year by 29 police forces which provided data.

In South Yorkshire in 2008 there were no reported offences involving social media networks.
