A GRIEVING dad’s campaign for health and safety checks to protect young people on apprenticeship and youth training schemes is being backed by a friend of his late son.

Richard Cain, of Lodge Moor, is concerned about Government-organised placements arranged to help cut the number of jobless youngsters.

His son, Derek, was killed in an accident while on a similar placement at a Sheffield recycling plant in the 1980s.

Mr Cain’s campaign is being backed by Derek’s old friend Michelle Greig, of Nottingham Street, Pitsmoor.

Michelle, aged 46. is urging people to join a Facebook support group she has set up.

Michelle said: “Derek’s death had a bad effect on me.

“There was only about a year between us and my mum and dad were his godparents.

“People are still getting injured or even killed in accidents at work.

“My concern is inspections are not going to be made at workplaces taking on trainees and it will be up to those on placements to report concerns - and they are not going to want to put their placement in jeopardy.”

Michelle’s Facebook group is called Derek Cain YTS.

Mr Cain has raised his concerns with his MP, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Liberal Democrat MP for Sheffield Hallam, who referred them to ministers in charge of the Government programme.
