MADDY the guide dog puppy is looking forward to a bright new future - with training paid for by recycled ink cartridges.

Staff at Veolia Environmental Services and Sheffield Council raised £5,000 by collecting city residents’ unwanted inkjet cartridges and mobile phones at household waste centres and via freepost envelopes.

The money has now been donated to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association where it will be used to provide full care and training for one new guide dog puppy, including all its veterinary and food bills.

As a thank-you. Veolia staff were invited to give their pup a name. Storekeeper Dean Wood won with his suggestion, Maddy.

He took home £75 of Meadowhall vouchers as his prize and also enjoyed a meeting with golden labrador Maddy who is hard at work learning her new guiding skills.

Recycling assistant Simon Heathcote said: “We are delighted.

“As well as aiding a very worthwhile cause, the scheme promotes our ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ ethos. We would like to thank everyone who donated.”

Sal Chapman, regional development fundraiser for Guide Dogs, said: “Anyone with dogs knows what joy they bring to people’s lives and what a bond we share with them, but an extra special bond exists between a guide dog and its owner.

“It makes such a difference to us to be able to be involved in these recycling schemes as it generates much needed funds.

“And they are a superb way to also encourage recycling.

“The funds that Veolia has generated will make a huge difference - recycling can be life-changing in more ways then one.”

Used inkjet cartridges and unwanted mobile phones can be taken to any of Sheffield’s five household waste recycling centres in Beighton, Deepcar, High Green, Shirecliffe and Blackstock Road.
