A clueless pensioner was caught driving down a motorway hard shoulder - on his mobility scooter.

The 85-year-old was spotted pootling down the M1 between junctions 31 and 32 near Sheffield.

Stunned lorry driver Steve Saxon watched as the OAP was pulled over by police on the northbound carriageway - and a passenger in Mr Saxon’s vehicle managed to film the jaw-dropping scene unfold.

Steve said: “I don’t know what he was thinking or where he thought he was going but it’s the most bizarre thing I’ve seen. He looked completely oblivious to what was going on.”

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said the force had received a number of calls about the unnamed pensioner’s trip down the hard shoulder, adding his family had been contacted.

The stretch of motorway was restricted to a 50mph limit due to roadworks at the time.

Steve, who runs SE Saxon Transport in South Elmsall, said: “At first we were gobsmacked but then we started laughing. It’s not funny but we couldn’t help but laugh.

“The traffic did slow down a bit. But I think most people would if they saw that.”
