NEWS IN BRIEF: Car in flames after crashing into wall

FIREFIGHTERS were called out to a car which burst into flames after crashing into a wall on Edmund Road, Highfield, Sheffield. Nobody was injured in the collision at 4.45am on Saturday.

Steelworks blaze

A SAFETY cordon was put in place around the steelworks at Stocksbridge when a steel smelting Crucible caught fire.

Crews were on site for around 90 minutes on Saturday morning.

Fryer catches fire

FIRE crews were called to Mecca Bingo in Sheffield city centre when a deep fat fryer went up in flames.

The alarm was raised at the Flat Street venue at 9.35pm on Saturday and the fire was contained to the kitchen.

School raid attempt

POLICE are investigating an attempted break-in of the sports hall at Newfield School, Norton Lees, Sheffield.

Anyone with information about the attempted raid at 12.25am last Tuesday should call police on 101.

A WOMAN, aged 89, was broken into by a sneak-in thief who crept into her home on Charles Ashmore Road, Norton, Sheffield.

The burglar struck at 6.30pm on Sunday January 29 and took cash from the house.

He was white, aged around 40 years old, 5ft tall and had a round face.

HOMES on Norton Lane, Norton and Spotswood Road, Gleadless Valley, were both broken into when windows were smashed to gain entry.

The property in Norton was broken into on Friday and the house in Gleadless Valley overnight on Tuesday into Wednesday last week.

Police in Sheffield are also investigating the break-in of a house on Gleadless Road, Gleadless Valley, when a door was forced open last Tuesday.

And officers are looking into the attempted break-in of a house on Northcote Avenue, Heeley, where an attempt to force open a door failed.

AN arrest has been made by police officers investigating a burglary on Thorpe House Road, Norton Lees, Sheffield, on Wednesday afternoon.

A glass window was smashed to gain entry to the property.

POLICE are searching for a Transit van stolen from Hallyburton Drive, Arbourthorne, Sheffield.

It was stolen overnight on Tuesday into Wednesday last week.
