NEWS IN BRIEF: Residents warned as clocks change

POLICE are urging people to be on guard against burglars as the nights draw in with the clocks going back on Sunday.

Derbyshire Police said there is a seasonal spike in house burglaries at this time of year when opportunist thieves take advantage of the dark nights to target homes.

Officers will be stepping up patrols.

Spate of car thefts

POLICE are investigating a spate of car break-ins in Sheffield committed overnight on Tuesday into Wednesday.

The cars were parked on Osborne Mews, Sharrow; Broadfield Road, Heeley; Alexandra Gardens, Nether Edge; Albert Road, Meersbrook and Mundella Place, Norton.

Anyone with information should call police on 101.

Tumble drier blaze

FIREFIGHTERS were called to Laurel Avenue, Bramley, Rotherham after a tumble drier caught fire in an outhouse.

An electrical fault was to blame for the blaze, which broke out at 8.30pm on Thursday. The flames did not spread to the house.

Bin is set alight

A WHEELIE bin was set alight in an arson attack on Hemsworth Road, Sheffield.

Flames from the burning bin spread to a car port it was next to in Norton on Thursday, at 10.20pm.

Waste chute fire

FIRE crews were called to Winn Drive, Middlewood, Sheffield, after a bin chute caught fire in the early hours of yesterday.

The fire did not spread and no residents needed to be evacuated.

Plates are stolen

A SET of number plates were stolen from an car parked on Carter Road, Heeley, during daylight hours on Tuesday,

Rubbish call out

FIREFIGHTERS were called to Rotherham town centre after a bin was found alight.

Yesterday’s fire, at 10am, is thought to be accidental.

Sheds broken into

SHEDS were broken into on Morland Place and Raeburn Road, both in Gleadless Valley, Sheffield, overnight on Monday into Tuesday.
