NEWS IN BRIEF: Bomb scare leads to street clearance

A STREET full of people was evacuated following a bomb scare in Chesterfield.

Police called in experts from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team following the discovery of a suspicious device in Church Lane, Calow, on Friday night.

Residents were moved to an evacuation centre set up at a nearby primary school.

The scene remained cordoned off the next day while a controlled explosion of the device was carried out on Saturday.

Detectives are continuing to investigate, and asked anyone with information to contact Derbyshire Police on 101.

Garden blazes

POLICE launched an investigation following a shed blaze in Ridge Road, Bolsover. The fire, which broke out at 6.39am on Saturday, is believed to have been started deliberately. Flames spread to the neighbouring fence and house.

A homemade bonfire got out of control in a Chesterfield garden. Firefighters were called to douse the flames at a house in Gladstone Road at 6.40pm on Friday.

Smell of burning

THE smell of burning prompted a call-out for firefighters in Chesterfield.

Homeowners reported the smell coming from a cupboard in a house in Gower Crescent at 3am on Saturday. The problem was caused by an electrical fault with an immersion heater.

Laundry room fire

A BLAZE broke out in a nursing home in Crookesmoor, Sheffield. Crews were called to a fire in a laundry room on the ground floor of Northfield Nursing Home in Roebuck Road at 11.08am yesterday. Paramedics also attended as a precaution.

Arson attack on bin

A BIN was set alight deliberately in Club Garden Road, Sharrow, Sheffield, at 4.10pm yesterday. Firefighters put out the blaze using buckets of water and the incident has been reported to South Yorkshire Police.

Shed set on fire

A SHED which went up in flames on Roseberry Street, Stairfoot, Barnsley, had been deliberately set alight. Firefighters were called out to deal with the blaze at 7pm last Wednesday.
