News In Brief: Birthday ramble ends in agony

A WOMAN celebrating her 60th birthday with a walk near Castleton had to be plucked from Mam Tor by the Buxton and Edale Mountain Rescue Teams.

Heavy rain made the hillside slippery, turning recognised paths in to mud trails.

The casualty, a woman from Nottingham, was on a short walk for her birthday with her husband when she slipped and broke her upper leg.

First aiders and a doctor gave the woman pain relief before placing her on a rescue stretcher to be carried down to a waiting ambulance.

Twenty volunteer team members with specialist equipment were involved in the rescue near Odin Mine at about 3.20pm on Friday.

Low cloud and fog prevented the air-ambulance flying, and the onset of darkness also complicated the evacuation.

Take to the stage

HIGH Green Musical Theatre Group is looking for new adult members in time for January rehearsals of next show Me and My Girl.

The group rehearses and performs at the EPPiC Theatre in Ecclesfield, and particularly needs new cast members to play ‘Lords and Ladies’ in the Downton Abbey-esque production. In particular the group is looking for a 20-something young man to play CBill Snibson, who goes from ockney barrow boy to refined gentleman during the course of the show.

Call Frank Stansfield on 01909 564087 or Rachel Marshall 07932 958080 for details.

Sounds like fun

John Morton’s Christmas got a lot easier after he won a prize on Russ Williams’ show on Absolute Radio. The national station set listeners the challenge of identifying the ‘real sounds’ of Christmas, and John, 47, who lives with wife Clair, 39, and children Harvey, 15, and Megan, 13, correctly identified the sound of a dishwasher to bag a £500 Tesco gift card.

Flooded bridge

FIRE crews were called after reports of flooding in Sykehouse, Doncaster. Officers attended Beaver’s Bridge at 11.30am on Sunday to pump water from the scene. Doncaster Council workers laid sandbags and the road was closed for several hours while the water was cleared.

Car arson blaze

A CAR was destroyed after being deliberately set ablaze in a light night attack. Fire crews from Doncaster station were called out to an address in Radburn Road, Rossington, at 12.30am on Sunday and officers spent half an hour damping down at the scene.
