NEWS IN BRIEF:

Chance to find out about new college

A NEW specialist college opening in Sheffield this year is offering young people and parents the chance to find out more about its courses.

The University Technical College Sheffield, the first of its kind in Yorkshire, is to open on Shoreham Street in September.

It will specialise in qualifications, plus work-based learning, for the advanced engineering, manufacturing and creative industries.

Young people, parents or teachers can meet principal Nick Crew and employers supporting the college’s curriculum.

They can also try out activities at The Workstation, Paternoster Row, this evening and again on Tuesday, January 29, from 6pm to 8pm.

Visit www.utcsheffield.org.uk/events to book.

Punching inquest

AN INQUEST has been adjourned until later in the year into the death of Sheffield man Kamlesh Ruparelia who was punched in a pub.

The 55-year-old, of Parkers Lane, Dore, was floored by a single punch at The White Rose in Handsworth in October 2010. He died three days later.

Kieron Alexander Beresford, 38, of Darnall, was arrested and later charged with manslaughter, but the case was dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Mugger foiled

A MUGGER tried to grab an 83-year-old woman’s handbag on Marsh Street, Wombwell, Barnsley – but she managed to hold on and shout for help.

The mugger was white, in his 20s, slim, and wearing a red baseball cap.

Call police on 101 quoting incident 554 of January 7.
