NEWS IN BRIEF:

Flood plains take excess river flow

Yorkshire’s record rainfall during 2012 has led to high water levels in the River Idle where it passes through Bawtry.

Such is the volume of water that the river has once again burst its banks and the flood plains on either side of the river on the eastern side of the town, along Gainsborough Road, are now under water over a large area.

Bawtry was once an inland port with a wharf that fell into disuse when the railway was built in the mid-19th century.

New showhomes

Housebuilder Taylor Wimpey is set to launch its first two show homes at an open weekend event at The Lavenders development in Mexborough on January 12 to 13.

Anne Bagshaw, sales and marketing director, said: “The Lavenders development has already generated a lot of interest with a number of sales going through, despite not yet having a sales office or show home. Launching the show homes in the new year will allow people the valuable opportunity to take a glimpse at the designs on offer.”

Zero inflation

tickhill Horticultural Society members have been pleased to learn their membership fees for 2013 will remain the same at just £7 for the year. They have 10 guest speakers to look forward to and the annual general meeting takes place on Thursday, January 31 at the Methodist Schoolroom.

Affordable homes

the site of the former Meadow Court sheltered housing complex in Radburn Road, Rossington, could be used for the construction of 14 new semi-detached affordable homes on an acre of land if a recent planning application is granted.

Motorway closures

gantry repairs on the M18 near Thorne, due to start today and lasting up to two weeks, will mean the closure of the southbound carriageway between the exit and entry slip road at North Ings between 8pm and 6am.
