SOME of Sheffield’s most problematic families will be targeted in a new council scheme which aims to cut truancy levels, crime, anti-social behaviour and get jobless parents back to work.
A total of 1,680 families in the city have been selected by the council to take part in the project which is called the Building Successful Families Programme.
The council is due give the plans the green light at a cabinet meeting next Wednesday, January 16.
The families selected suffer from a range of issues including drug and alcohol abuse, mental health difficulties, illness, disability, unemployment, inadequate housing and poverty.
The aim is to cut the amount of taxpayers’ money being spent on social care, criminal justice, the health service and benefits system.
Coun Jackie Drayton, Sheffield Council’s cabinet member for children, young people and families said: “It’s clear that intervention to help and support the most vulnerable children, young people and families in our city is needed.
“It will be better not only for those families but also for our communities. This scheme would help make our services for families work better for all.”
She added: “This investment would enable us to build on the excellent work going on in Sheffield helping to make families more stable and independent, helping them turn their lives around and giving a brighter future for their children.”
The council already spends money on the service and it will be matched by cash from the Government’s Troubled Families Programme over the next three years.
