Police have launched a murder inquiry after a man who visited Sheffield for a wedding and a night out ended up dead following a random attack.

Anowar Tagabo, aged 25, attended a wedding and met a friend for a night out in the city centre afterwards, but was assaulted outside a bar on Carver Street.

Police today revealed he had come to the UK for a ‘better life’.

He suffered a serious head injury and was rushed to hospital, where his condition deteriorated. He died nine days later.

A murder probe is now under way.

Police said Anowar had remained in the city centre after his friend went home.

CCTV cameras captured footage of him and another man, who has yet to be identified but who had been with Anowar in the bars, jogging down Carver Street to avoid rain at around 4.20am on Sunday, May 25.

But, near the corner of Division Street, they found themselves involved in an altercation with a group of men and women, police said.

Anowar was attacked and fell to the ground, while the other man he was with was chased away.

CCTV footage from across the city centre is now being analysed to try to identify those in the group with the attacker.

Detective Chief Inspector Natalie Shaw, leading the murder probe, has a 20-strong team working on the case.

She revealed that Anowar, who was originally from Sudan, and who was studying Peace and Development Studies at The University of Bradford, came to Britain ‘for a better life’.

“His family is devastated because he had come to the UK for a better life but it has ended in tragedy,” she said.

“He came to Sheffield for a community wedding, where he was representing his family. He had also arranged to meet a friend for a night out in Sheffield city centre, and the pair had gone into various bars.

“His friend went home but Anowar remained out with another man who they had been with on their night out.

“They were last seen jogging down Carver Street to avoid the rain, and then there was a group of males and females on the corner with Division Street. Words were exchanged and someone attacked Anowar and he fell to the ground.

“The other man he was with was chased away by a member of the group.”

She said a number of people must have witnessed the attack.

“There are definitely people who will have seen this - we can see from CCTV footage that there were a lot of people in the area at the time,” she said.

“They need to come forward because, however small or insignificant they think the information they have is, it may help us form a full picture.

“We don’t know the reason for the attack.”

DCI Shaw said Sheffield remains ‘one of the safety cities in the country’ and incidents of serious violence are ‘few and far between’.

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 281 of May 25, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
