MP fights for phone-hacking victims
Denis MacShane
A SOUTH Yorkshire MP who accepted £27,500 in damages from News International after the company admitted hacking his phone has hit out over plans to keep some victims in the dark.
Denis MacShane, Labour MP for Rotherham, has criticised the Information Commissioner for not revealing the extent of the problem to victims.
Chris Graham, the commissioner, said his office did not intend to inform every person mentioned in the notes of private detective Steve Whittamore.
But Mr MacShane said the decision was unacceptable and called for a debate in the Commons.
He said: “The details of this are with the police, with the newspapers, but not with the victims themselves.
“This man is meant to be in charge of Freedom of Information, but is denying the most important information to thousands of victims of newspaper collaboration with a criminal – namely that they are victims and can and should seek redress.
“I will ask the Commons home affairs and media select committee to look into this.”
