OLD people need more help in cold weather – with tens of thousands struggling to afford soaring fuel bills, according to a South Yorkshire politician.
Dan Jarvis, Labour MP for Barnsley Central, made the call during a speech to the Age UK AGM in the town.
Mr Jarvis said in Barnsley, 20,400 households are living in fuel poverty – the classification given to people who have to spend more than 10 per cent of their income on fuel.
Elderly people make up more than half the number.
Mr Jarvis said: “It is wrong elderly people are suffering.”
