A BID to find a taker for the site of Doncaster Rovers’ former Belle Vue ground is set to be launched.
Bosses at Doncaster Council aim to transform the site into a prestigious development, and elected mayor Peter Davies and his cabinet have approved plans to market the site – Rovers’ home until 2006 – for sale.
Proposals for the Bawtry Road scheme include five separate plots of luxury housing and apartments with views over the historic Doncaster Racecourse.
The six-and-a-half acre site, which lines one of Doncaster’s busiest arterial roads close to the town centre, is seen as one of the borough’s key regeneration projects.
But the latest move does not commit Doncaster Council to any deal with potential developers.
The cabinet will have to approve any decision to proceed with a sale when it is agreed.
The joint marketing move, between the council which owns the freehold and leaseholders Westferry Limited, is understood to be purely to determine potential interest from developers.
Peter Dale, the council’s director of regeneration and environment, said: “The council together with Westferry Limited is intending to market the former Belle Vue site.
“We are hopeful that there will be strong market interest and a further decision as to whether or not to proceed with a sale will be made by the council’s cabinet after the marketing process.”
Mr Davies and his cabinet approved the marketing proposal in a behind-closed-doors meeting in September.
The details have only recently been made public.
It is believed the move does not affect the immediate future of Doncaster Town Moor golf club.
The original proposal included moving the clubhouse to greenbelt land near Rose Hill Rise in Bessacarr before residents opposed the plans.
Former mayor Martin Winter and his cabinet backed the Belle Vue transformation in February 2008 – over a year after Rovers moved to the £32million publicly-funded Keepmoat Stadium.
The council owns the freehold, but Westferry owns a lease on the land.
