NEWS: The Star is bringing you latest news round the clock.

FIREFIGHTERS had to cut a motorist from the wreckage of his car after the vehicle left Sheffield Parkway and hit a tree.

The out-of-city carriageway was closed between the Handsworth junction and Catcliffe for more than three hours following the collision at about 2.30am today.

No other vehicles were involved.

A South Yorkshire Fire Service spokesman said: “Crews were called to the scene and found a silver BMW car which had left the carriageway and was down the embankment, having been stopped by a tree.

“The single occupant, a young man, was conscious and we had to cut him free. He was taken to hospital.”

The road reopened at about 5.45am.

■ Workers and security staff were evacuated from a steelworks after a fire broke out in switching gear.

The incident happened at about 8pm yesterday evening at the IEP Doncaster engineering firm on Penistone Road, Sheffield. Firefighters confined the blaze to the switching gear and left the scene after around 90 minutes.
