Man charged over murder

A MAN has been charged with murder following the death of Philip Smith (pictured) after a disturbance in Thurnscoe.

Gary McKeown, aged 36, of Church Street, Thurnscoe, was due to appear before Barnsley Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.

Mr Smith, from Stotfold Drive, Thurnscoe, was found injured in Church Street, on Saturday, January 28, at about 4.30pm, following a disturbance near the junction with Houghton Road.

The 36-year-old was rushed to Barnsley District General Hospital, but later died from his injuries.

His family said: “Philip was a much-loved member of a large family and we will never forget him.”
