Man stored thousands of used tyres illegally

A SUSPENDED prison sentence was given to a man who illegally stored thousands of tyres and transported some to Vietnam.

Andrew Revell, aged 50, of The Green, Hasland, Chesterfield, was prosecuted by the Environment Agency over an illegal waste operation, Revco Recycling Limited, which he ran from a unit on the Sheepbridge industrial estate, Chesterfield.

Revell was given a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years, ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and told to pay court costs of £9,578.75 after admitting five offences relating to the operation he ran.

Barrister Ben Lawrence, for the Environment Agency, said officers first visited his firm in October 2009 and saw up to 4,000 tyres not covered by a permit.

Environment Agency staff repeatedly visited and advised Revell and his wife on waste regulations and told them to reduce the amount of waste they stored.

In another search documents were found showing that around 15,600 tyres were received by the company between November 16 and December 11, 2009.

They found evidence Revell supplied another 1,283 tyres to another company. Staff estimated there were about 25,000 tyres there. They found another unit Revell was using, where there were 400 bales of tyres inside, 260 bales outside and 160 loose tyres.

The court heard Revell had cleared the site himself, costing over £30,000. Profits the Environment Agency claim were made were substantially less, taking into account running costs.
