Man’s jaw broken in market attack

News: Local, national and international news 24-hours a day.

A MAN had his jaw broken in an unprovoked attack near Doncaster Market.

The 19-year-old was at the centre of the traffic island, on Market Road near St George’s roundabout, when he was approached by an attacker who punched him in the face.

The victim was transported to Rotherham General Hospital, where he received treatment for a serious fracture to his lower jaw.

The Rotherham hospital has a specialist jaw unit.

Insp Shakeel Ahmed said: “This was an unprovoked and serious assault which left the victim requiring surgery and being admitted to hospital for several days.

“Incidents such as this are rare in Doncaster, and it is important that we identify and arrest the man responsible as quickly as possible.

“The attack occurred on a busy arterial route into the town.

“It was at a time of day when commuters and pedestrians are travelling into the town centre, so it is likely there were witnesses to the assault.”

The suspect was described as a white male, aged between 19 and 20 years old, of slim build. He had short dark brown hair with blue eyes.

He was wearing a black hooded top and black tracksuit bottoms, with double white stripes down each side.

Doncaster Market Traders’ Federation chairman Nigel Wilkinson said he would like to see more police in the area around the market.

He said: “I think during the day it is very safe around the markets area, because the traders will look out for everyone.

“But the concern is what happens in the early evening after the stalls and closed and the traders gone home.”

The assault happened at around 8.50am on Thursday, October 25, a police spokesman said.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone with information, is asked to contact the police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting incident number 217 of October 30.
