Man remanded over murder

A MAN charged with murder has been remanded in custody for a week after his first appearance at court.

Gary McKeown, aged 36, of Church Street, Thurnscoe, Barnsley, is accused of killing 36-year-old Philip Smith, who was stabbed to death.

Mr Smith, of Stotfold Drive, Thurnscoe, was found injured in Church Street, Thurnscoe, around 4.30pm on Saturday, January 28, after a disturbance near the junction with Houghton Road.

He was taken to Barnsley District General Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

McKeown, who has not yet entered a plea, was remanded in custody by Barnsley magistrates and will appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday.
