Detectives were last night questioning a man on suspicion of the murder of Sheffield dad Simon Holdsworth.

The 45-year-old man from Sheffield was arrested yesterday afternoon.

The body of paint sprayer Mr Holdsworth, aged 36, was found in a field off Birley Spa Lane, Hackenthorpe, Sheffield, on the morning of Tuesday, December 17.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police have arrested a 45-year-old Sheffield man on suspicion of the murder of Simon Holdsworth.

“The family of Simon Holdsworth have been made aware of the arrest.

“The 45-year-old man is currently in custody and will be questioned by detectives.”

Mr Holdsworth, who lived with his partner Carleen McKeown and their four-year-old son Tiarnan in Westfield Avenue, Hackenthorpe, was attacked as he made his way home from his job at FBS Prestige in Intake.

He was last seen on a bus he caught near The Noah’s Ark pub on Mansfield Road, Intake, on the night of Monday, December 16.

His body was found the next morning by a member of the public who alerted the police.

A post mortem examination revealed he had died from head injuries.

Mr Holdsworth and Miss McKeown were engaged to be married next year.

Colleagues said he’d been working extra shifts in order to save money to pay for their wedding.

Last weekend police officers went door to door, speaking to residents in Hackenthorpe, in a bid to find new leads.

Speaking at a press conference shortly after his death, Simon’s mother Christine Holdsworth said her son was a ‘huge Sheffield Wednesday fan’, had ‘endless friends’ and would go out of his way to help anybody.

“What has happened to Simon has devastated our lives,” she said. “We are such a close family and this has left a huge hole. He was over the moon to be getting married next year and loved his fiancée and little son very much.”
