Lock of hair and treasured photos stolen by intruder

A thief stole treasured photos of a trusting pensioner’s late wife - and a lock of her hair - in a callous distraction burglary.

The culprit - a ginger-haired youth in his late teens to early 20s, wearing a hi-vis jacket and carrying a clipboard - knocked on the door of a home in Baslow Road, Athersley South, Barnsley, on Saturday morning.

He asked for sponsorship for a bike ride for the air ambulance and the victim, a man in his 70s, went into the house to get some money.

But the youth followed him, and then snatched a bumbag containing the sentimental items plus £600 in cash.

The incident happened at 10.50am.

Anyone with information is urged to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident 431 of December 14.
