A former radio presenter on Sheffield station Magic AM has been jailed for life after murdering his fiancee.
Geoff Hemming, aged 52, stabbed Denise Williamson, 44, ten times in a frenzied, drunken attack last July.
The couple were engaged, but Hemming was convinced Denise was having an affair. He was also depressed and suicidal after losing his radio job in Sheffield and racking up debts of £40,000-plus.
Nottingham Crown Court heard Hemming initially denied killing Denise and tried to create the impression both of them had been attacked by an intruder at their home in Hucknall, Notts. He later pleaded guilty to murder.
Hemming had been a popular and successful presenter in the 1980s and ’90s with East Midlands stations GEM-AM and Classic Gold GEM.
But he could also be controlling, jealous and verbally abusive - and Denise had confided in friends Hemming was a ‘swinger’ who once watched her have sex with other men.
He lost his final radio job, with Sheffield-based Magic AM, in May last year. As he faced bankruptcy he tried his hand as a driving instructor.
But the combination of ‘what was going on in his professional and financial life, and the perception of what was happening in his personal life, tipped him over the edge’, the court heard.
He must serve a minimum of 18 years before parole.
