Library protest is organised

CAMPAIGNERS from Sheffield Uncut have launched a protest group to rally against private organisations taking over branches from Sheffield Council.

Sheffield Communities Against Libraries Privatisation believes money to fill Britain’s deficit should be recouped from closing tax avoidance loopholes.

The council is inviting groups to bid to run community libraries – otherwise 14 of the city’s 27 will have to close.

SCALP has been inviting people to attend Sheffield Central Library, Surrey Street, today, from noon, to sign a Big Book of Sheffield Libraries, and say what their local library means to them.

Sheffield Uncut is concerned about ‘privatisation’ of libraries and says using volunteers to run them would ‘undermine professionalism’.
